How to tend to apparel in an
Environmentally Friendly Fashion
All laundry products drain to a waterway, eventually. Municipal wastewater treatment systems are good at removing toxins, but substances that are slow to biodegrade in high concentrations can cause trouble. The use of low phosphate, non-petroleum based soap can help.
Here are a few things we can do to help minimize the impact on our environment, while caring for our laundry.
Washing
- Always choose the lowest possible water temp you can; it takes energy to heat water. In fact, 90% of the energy used to clean your clothing is used to heat the water.
- Choose the shortest cycle to get your clothes clean.
- Load the machine to capacity. It is more energy efficient to do one large load than two smaller loads.
Drying
- Hanging to dry is always best for fabric longevity and the environment.
- Always choose the highest temp that will not damage your clothes, and shortest duration drying cycle. High temperatures dry faster and more efficiently, but be careful not to over-dry!
- If you have a few stragglers that are still damp, don’t turn the whole load on for another 15 minutes; hang dry those pieces separately.
- Clean the dryer filter after each use. A clogged filter will restrict airflow and reduce dryer performance.
